South America Highlights Itinerary
Day 1 – Lima
You are met in Lima and transferred to your hotel. Your day is at leisure to explore the city.

Day 2 – Lima
Enjoy a morning tour of the capital’s highlights will show you sights including the historic centre
of Lima – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The afternoon is at leisure for you to explore the city at
your own pace.

Day 3 – Lima / Arequipa
Today we fly to Arequipa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site awash with Spanish colonial architecture.
A tour of Arequipa will reveal to us the beautiful landscapes of the city, volcanoes and pre-Incan
terraces. We will then visit the old neighbourhoods of San Lázaro and Yanahuara, continuing our tour
on to Arequipa’s Cathedral, Chapel San Ignacio, and, finally, the Santa Catalina Monastery, a
remarkable and beautiful 16th century city that was opened to the public in 1970 after 400 years of
cloistered religious life.

Day 4 – Arequipa / Colca Canyon
We depart in the morning to begin our two-day excursion to the Colca Canyon. A lunch will be provided
today. Our journey towards the canyon will lead us past the volcanoes Misti, Chachani, Ampatao as well
as Sabancaya, which remains active. We will visit the Observatory of the Cordillera Occidental and,
after arriving at our destination in Chivay, we will continue our trip into the surroundings, passing
by the village of Coporaque, visiting the amphitheatre of Ocolle and the hot springs of La Calera. In
the evening we return to enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 – Colca Canyon / Puno
After an early breakfast we make our way to the Colca Canyon’s viewpoints, including Cruz del Condor,
which is located at the deepest point of the canyon. Afterwards we will transfer to Puno at
Lake Titicaca.

Day 6 – Puno
In a full day boat tour we make our first stop at the inventive Uros islands. Rising six metres above
Lake Titicaca, these are man-made islands, constructed of logs and Totora reeds, inter-connected
with ropes and still inhabited by descendants of the Uros indians. We then proceed to Taquille Island,
a mid-lake mountaintop, where timeless customs and traditions of the residents are shared with
visitors to the Island.

Day 7 – Puno / Cuzco
Today follows a full day journey by bus to Cuzco.

Day 8 – Cuzco
We begin today with a half-day tour that takes you through the exact centre of the Inca Empire,
the Plaza de Armas. The next stop will be the old town with its magnificent renovated colonial buildings.
We then proceed to Sacsayhuaman, a ruin site that stands 3km above Cuzco, offering fabulous views over
the city. After visiting a number of other Inca ruins we return to the hotel, where the rest of the day
is at leisure.

Day 9 – Cuzco
Your whole day is at leisure to explore Cuzco at your own will.

Day 10 – Cuzco / Yucay
This morning we will take a half-day tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas where we will visit the
Pisac Indian market before continuing to Yucay.

Day 11 – Yucay – Machu Picchu - Yucay
Today we transfer by bus to the station, where we board our train for our journey to Machu Picchu.
Passing through the fertile plain of the Urubamba valley and onto Aguas Calientes, we then continue
up the steep mountain to the ruin town of Machu Picchu. Called the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ this
magnificent cultural heritage site is truly a site to behold. Following an extensive guided visit
of this impressive site we return by train and bus to the Sacred Valley.

Day 12 – Yucay / Cuzco / Lima
Today we will transfer from the hotel to the airport of Cuzco for a flight to Lima where your times is
free until your return flight to the UK. (B)
